Turkey requires to utilize its young population for research and development in heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector, undersecretary of Ministry of Industry and Trade Ali Boğa says at a sectoral event, expressing the importance of finding new markets. The sector has an estimated volume of $10 billion
Turkey’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector needs to find new markets to be more dynamic, undersecretary of Ministry of Industry and Trade Alı Boğa said Wednesday.
Speaking at the ISK-Sodex Fair at Istanbul, Boğa said Turkey needed to continue developing in the industry and utilize its young population for research and development in the sector. “Either we will find new markets or we will stay as an [open-air] market,” he said.
Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning sector currently employs 250,000 people in Turkey and has an estimated volume of $10 billion, of which $2.5 billion is exported. The market is expected to reach $25 billion by year 2023.
Representatives of foreign heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration firms at the exhibition noted the market turbulence of recent years has led to tighter competition between companies around the world. Many of the exhibitors at the ISK-Sodex 2010 are looking for local partners, increased sales volume or new expansion opportunities in Turkey.
Özkan Sarıözkan, sales manager at Teknoklima, which distributes Samsung system air-conditioners, said the market for central heating systems in Turkey did not decline last year but did not grow either. Samsung system air-conditioners has a market share of 8 percent in Turkey, where the market consists of some 16 players and has an estimated size of $80 million. Most of the systems are manufactured in Japan, China and South Korea.
“There was no decline in our market section last year, sales volumes stayed by and large unchanged,” Sarıözkan said. “But of course, overall profit margins were down and the market became more competitive. This year we expect the market to reach approximately $100-$120 million,” he added.
Emin Ergüven, owner of Doğal Geothermal Energy Systems, noted Turkey’s process to join the European Union has had a particularly positive impact on the energy-efficient heating market. Doğal Geothermal Energy Systems became the exclusive distributor for environmentally friendly Swedish Nibe heat pumps in February 2009. “We have received a very positive welcome in this market. The state is really promoting renewable energy systems, and there is also legislative framework helping us,” Ergüven said.
During its first year in Turkey, Doğal Geothermal Energy Systems concluded agreements on 12 projects. “Last year was difficult for our market anyway, so this is a good beginning. This year, if we are lucky, we will sign on 80-100 projects. For 2012 we have an even bigger target of 120 projects,” Ergüven said.
Turkey’s construction boom is offering notable potential for future growth, Ergüven said.
“The ongoing and upcoming construction projects in Turkey are huge, especially in Istanbul, where in Beykoz alone some 50,000 villas will be built by year 2015. When taking into account that heat pumps pay themselves back in the shortest time of all renewable energy systems – in three to five years – it is obvious the system will be a hit in Turkey too.”
While some market players have arrived at the ISK-Sodex to boost their sales volumes, others, including Sino-American joint venture Accessen, are looking for a local distributor. Shanghai-based Accessen manufactures plate heat exchangers and currently exports 20 percent of its production mainly to Russia.
“We did market research on Turkey and realized there is huge potential here. Most plate heat exchangers sold in Turkey are currently imported from Europe, and for now there is no other Chinese company active here in this particular sector,” Sean Wu, director of international business department at Accessen said. Accessen believes it will have a competitive advantage in Turkey because of its pricing policies. “Our advantage compared to European imports is in price. This year we are also looking to expand sales to Indonesia and Pakistan,” Sean said.
Sasan Moghimi, purchase and R&D manager at Mehr Asl based in Tehran, Iran, on the other hand, noted Iranian firms have a competitive advantage in Turkey over Chinese firms because of their geographical location. Mehr Asl manufacturers air-conditioning and refrigeration systems as well as copper tubes and isolation materials produced in its factory in Tabriz, only hours from the Turkish border. Mehr Asl has been active in the Turkish markets for the past three months.
“In Turkey our products are facing some competition from the Chinese, who are offering very cheap prices. Our products are reasonably priced as well, but we also have the advantage to deliver the goods to Turkey in two weeks whereas from China transportation takes four weeks,” Moghimi said.
The ISK-Sodex Fair continues until May 8, and is expected to host 80,000 visitors.
